December, 2007, Wisdom Magazine Online Edition:

THE HEALING OF NELDA DOE

One never knows when one might be hit by a miracle.  While I know that now, I wasn’t thinking it the moment I felt the stiff breeze of a white sheeted gurney float by my head.  Instead, relieved I thought “I won’t be in the morgue tonight”.  For someone who had just been hit by a truck and crashed into a guard rail at 70mph, I figured I was doing pretty well.  I wasn’t bleeding anywhere I could see, and not out of control with pain.  Immobilized in a neck collar, I laid for hours cringing at the garish snapshots flashing at the corner of my eye: stabbing victims, drug overdoses, violent accident victims, and gurneys on their way to the morgue at the University of California, Davis Trauma Center in Sacramento, California.  The ER’s trauma wing was bulging beyond capacity.  Better off than some, I was parked near the ambulance entrance and given a wrist bracelet that, for privacy reasons, said “Nelda Doe”,  #5 Hallway”.

As an Intuition & Energy Medicine Practitioner by profession, I know the importance of working with energy and asking for divine help.  So, I spent my time addressing the angels and energetic beings who help me in my work.  I asked that if it was for my highest good and within the will of God, whatever was wrong be healed.  In response, a thought came: Don’t worry; problems are being addressed.  I ordered fear away and tried to relax.  After three hours, I went to x-ray and heard the tech say “She has a cervical fracture.”  I again spoke silently to my divine help.  “If there is anything that can be fixed, now would be a good time to fix it.”  I was again told not to worry - everything was as it should be.

Back at #5 Hallway, I stared at the ceiling continuously, watching shapes form among the pin prick size holes of the ceiling tiles.  The shapes were decidedly faces: I would order the sad faces away, and watch the happy faces return.  Those happy faces gave me some feeling of hope.  Then I heard the phone ring.  The nurse hung up the phone and said to someone “Have the Doctor call - the films on Nelda Doe are not good.”  Fear overtook me like a storm.  Within minutes, a doctor came over and told me I had a neck fracture.  He said I needed surgery, and before that, more tests.

As he walked away, I felt my body fill with paralyzing icy terror.  It suddenly occurred to me that I could die without ever leaving the Trauma Unit.  I became consumed with the regret that I might leave this planet before I felt ready.  And most painful of all, that I might die before I had the chance to say good-bye to my family, and to tell them how much they have meant to me.  Hours before, I had encouraged my family to go home until I knew more.  Now, my cell phone was dead.  Unable to reach my family, I asked for a Social Worker and was swept away to Radiology.

A few hours later, another doctor approached.  He said “I have some good news.  We can’t find the break on the recent imaging, and are sending you home.”  He said he didn’t know why or how, but that the break was simply not there.  That night, Nelda Doe got a personal lesson in miracles.

It has recently dawned on me that I am now a statistic.  A statistic that all of us can be - a statistic of unexplained healing.  How?  We first realize that miracles happen, and believe that a miracle can happen to us.  Then, we ask our divine help to facilitate whatever miracle is possible for us.  And, we ask daily.  Since we may experience a miracle and not even know it, we give thanks for the possibility of miracles and for the life we have.  We practice gratitude.  And in that state of gratitude, we live a more cherished and actualized life.
